“california….knows how to party…” in a couple weeks, team radiohypno packs up its game and heads out west, to the sunny, sandy spot that is Los Angeles. in preparation for the left-coast trek, we bring you a guest mix from the lovely and talented sara flemming, aka .sara, who will be playing host to us in La La Land.

.sara is a professional web designer, and is teetering perilously on the edge between “amateur” and “professional” photography…i’ve seen a lot of her work, and lemmetellya: it’s damn good.

additionally, she is into graphic design, and has an un-healthy addiction to fonts. she also designed the only tattoo artwork to yet grace my skin. yet…

.sara’s little corner of the intartubes.

without further ado…tracklist and commentary after the jump. let’s get it on!

.sara presents “Into the West”

  1. Dame Shirley Bassey - Get the Party Started
  2. The Bird & The Bee - F-cking Boyfriend
  3. The Attic - Catch Me When I Fall for You
  4. Cut Chemist - The Garden
  5. Miguel Migs - Side to Side ft. Lisa Shaw
  6. Hellogoodbye - Here (In Your Arms) (Young Americans Remix)
  7. Groove Armada - Lightsonic
  8. Idris Muhammad - Could Heaven Ever Be Like This
  9. Forever Thursday - How Could It Be
  10. Chuck Love - Take Me (Original Mix)
  11. Amazonics - Redemption Song

As I started building this mix, I was worried that it would be too all over the place with no central thread to keep it all together. then I thought: so what? And then I thought, hey why not just 2 parts, like an A and B side? And then when I wasn’t looking, it all started to
just work. Even the track titles tell a little story.

We start out a little silly and ironic (yet awesome) and then dive right into bright and shiny summer tracks that’ll get your feet tapping and head bobbing (I am currently in big-time love with “Catch Me When I Fall for You”).

If there’s a turning point, it’s Idris Muhammed’s “Could Heaven Ever Be Like This.” It is classic and old school and it’s definitely my secret weapon track. After “Could Heaven” the mix has a slower pace and longer stride wrapping up with gentle house cover of “Redemption Song.”
1. “Get the Party Started” - Dame Shirley Bassey
I love this ironically and on its own merits; Shirley Bassey is perfection. You must watch the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqNcyFNMfLM

2. “F-cking Boyfriend” - The Bird & The Bee
It starts out all modern eletronica and drops right into building toward its catchy hook. In a word: fabulous. http://thebirdandthebee.com/ | http://www.myspace.com/thebirdandthebee

3. “Catch Me When I Fall for You” - The Attic
A refreshingly electronic pop song from a fun Swedish duo you’ve never heard of but that you’re sure to love. http://www.theattic.se/ | http://www.myspace.com/atticsite

4. “The Garden” - cut chemist
It’s a year or so old, but this one grabbed me the first time I heard it in Mays’s profile playlist. The Brazillian vocals and vibe move perfectly with the horns and that beat!

5. “Side to Side ft. Lisa Shaw” - Miguel Migs
If there’s a better DJ/vocalist combo than Migs & Lisa Shaw… I can’t think of it. Both fantastic on their own, but together they *are* west coast summertime.

6. “Here (in your arms) Young Americans remix” - Hellogoodbye
I love the bouncy funk of the layered sounds that Young Americans brings to this modern.alt.pop track — I like it better than the original, if you want the truth.

7. “Lightsonic” - Groove Armada
When Jason Bentley gets going on KCRW’s “Metropolis” there’s just no stopping him. He threw this in one Friday night early this summer and it’s been in constant rotation for me ever since; it builds to the first chorus and then drops back before coming back with everything its got just over 4 minutes in.

8. “Could Heaven Ever Be Like This” - Idris Muhammad
My friend Matt’s managed to cultivate a kick-ass music list which is where I was introduced to this track. The horns, the harp! theeasy-going ’70s vocals and that drumming: it’s an eight-minute vacation you won’t tire of.

9. “How Could It Be” - Forever Thursday
This actually ran in a recent series of JC Penny commercials if you can believe it; I love the relatively few sounds going on here, so light.

10. “Take Me (Original Mix)” - Chuck Love
I adore Mr. Love when he swings into the west coast house sound, it’s so relaxed and engaging, never thoughtless or lazy.

11. “Redemption Song” - Amazonics
Bob Marley cover, house music, and light girly vocals: what’s not to like? A well-done tribute to the original.
