what? two guest mixes in a row? is your intrepid dj getting lazy on you? how can this be?
relax, friends. i’m just so entertained and amused by turning over the playlist reins to friends that i don’t want to stop the party. i’m simply enjoying this too much!
this week’s guest mix was submitted by friend and blogstress extraordinaire, andrea w. originally hailing from somweheresville, ohio, andrea found her way to the sandy beaches of pittsburgh for her higher education, and is now in the masters program for publishing at NYU.
i have to say, i’m surprised with this mix. i expected more indie rock, and was pleasantly surprised with a nice selection of electronically infused goodness. and the gap band. i fuckin’ LOVE the gap band. did i ever tell you that the first tape i got (my 3rd birthday, march 1979) was the gap band album with “oops, upside your head” on it. not only did i wear it out, but i still have it to this day, in all its unplayable glory.

my thoughts (liveblogging as i listen….):
Dan Deacon - Snake Mistakes
interesting…a nice combo of rock and electronic. i could listen to more of this and not be bored.
Battles - Leyendecker
overtones of an instrumental NIN song…only funkier.
Awesome New Republic - Wheels, No Engines
can’t help it, the guy’s voice reminds me of TMBG…
Circlesquare - Fight Sounds, Part 1
ok. just ok. nothing exciting.
A plus D - Standing In the Way of Connection
i’m still a sucker for a good mashup, and this is excecuted well. and i love beth’s voice on this song. doesn’t get old.
The Changes - When I Wake
…lame sounding plinky-plonky intro give way to excellent 80’s-college-radio-alternative sounding pop. nice choice. not obvious. this one’s new to me. i like.
YACHT - Summer Song
i dig this in the same way i dig stuff like hot chip and zongamin…funky, disco-y, danceable. i’d like to get more of this stuff and dj a whole set of it…
Bromheads Jacket - Trip to the Golden Arches
first thought: “whoa…the ‘my united states of whatever’ guy has a british accent in this song!” then i thought…”The Streets goes indie.”
Robyn - Konichiwa Bitches
i swear i heard this song like 2 years ago…i guess this just got released in the u.s. this year?
Mickey Avalon - Jane Fonda
just fun. the whole album is pretty decent.
Snowden - Dreams
eh. doesn’t really excite me. i mean, i like the song, but i’m not much for the vocals on this version.
The Gap Band - Early In The Morning
classic. that bass is just MONSTER.
The Postmarks - Goodbye
i like it…reminds me of The Cardigans a little bit. are they scandinavian?
Camera Obscura - Suspended From Class
belle and sebaistan had children. they made this song. twee as a motherfucker. but not bad.
Beat Radio - Treetops
knowing nothing about them, i’d guess they’re from the pacific northwest, and listened to a lot of K Records’ output. i’m wrong, of course, but that’s the mental image.
Architecture in Helsinki - Maybe You Can Owe Me
i’m not diametrically opposed to super-hipster darlings, but i just can’t get really into this. to my ears, it lacks something.
Chris Garneau - Between the Bars
very pretty melody, very pretty voice, and some good, simple lyrics. wait…that’s a dude?
Blitzen Trapper - Wild Mountain Nation
not bad at all. i like all the different aspects of this…southern rock/blues filtered through zeppelin, with a healthy dose of mudhoney thrown in as well…nice closer!
all in all, a very solid debut by a promising young DJ!! well done, ma’am.
