radiohypno = radio silence.

by hypno on June 26th, 2007

as i was preparing to upload this week’s radiohypno podcast, i remembered that today is the Internet Radio Day of Silence. in cooperation with savenetradio.org, hundreds of internet radio stations have gone silent today to protest the drastic royalty rate hikes that are due to take effect on 7/15. to quote the guys at soma.fm (one of radiohypno’s favorite online music spots):

“Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). SomaFM will be liable for $600,000 in additional royalties for 2006, and over $500,000 for the first half of 2007. As of July 15th, we will owe $1.1 million dollars in additional royalties.”

this is, of course, ridiculous…that these folks who are doing what they love (bringing music to people like you and me) should be penalized for it is laughable at best, but more akin to criminal.

SO…even though RadioHypno is not a true “internet radio” broadcaster, in solidarity with those who are, and at the risk of losing my market share (all 10 of you who’ve downloaded last week’s episode)…i’ve decided to delay this week’s podcast another day, and bring it to you when the calendar flips to 6/27.

and i encourage anyone reading this to contact your congress-person and end this ridiculous assault on small-time broadcasters/webcasters. all we want to do is bring some good music to you.
